This Is Connecticut Events Calendar Update

I have updated the Connecticut Events Calendar using Google Calendar. It's easy to use, and it loads much faster than the old calendar, which as it turns out, was about three miles long if you printed it out.

To see full details of an event just click on the event title and a drop down view with all the event details appears. The new calendar also includes a link to Google maps for directions to the event locations.

You can also scroll through the weeks or months using the arrows at the top left corner or click on the date to see a drop down calendar view and select a date. Visit the events calendar here.

I'd love to have feedback from any readers.

Year in Review

Thank you once again for visiting ThisIsCT.net throughout the year. 2007 was an amazing year, we more than doubled the amount of website visitors from the previous year to over 200,000 visitors from around the world.

Where the website visitors are from:
A quick sampling includes visitors from United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Uruguay, China, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, Spain, Brazil, Italy, Korea, South, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Belgium and more. In 2008 I'll be looking at adding language support to the website for our international visitors.

In the year-end tradition of making lists (I do love a list!) I'd like to take a look back at some of the most popular blog posts and web pages for thisisct.net in 2007, these are not in any particular order.

No surprise, this December you wanted to visit some of Connecticut's popular Christmas Light Displays this year.

And during the holiday season you were also looking for some Uniquely Connecticut Gifts to give.

Also, popular, the hockey schedules for the Hartford Wolfpack and the Bridgeport Soundtigers.

During the summer Governor Rell wanted us all to do One Thing Green. Watch for more information on this, including a big convention event coming in 2008...

On the Fourth of July there was something other than fireworks in the sky in Meriden that grabbed the attention of a lot of visitors.

Buttonwood Farms Sunflowers and the Connecticut Wine Trail were popular pages and great places to visit.

July 21st marked the release of one of history's most popular books, Book 7 of the Harry Potter series, and the page for events and midnight parties was hot.

Speaking of Harry Potter, I had the thought in my head that since NBC 30's Gerry Brooks shaved off the mustache, he looks a lot like actor Alan Rickman who plays Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies. Gerry didn't really agree with me, see what you think for yourself.

And, speaking of NBC 30, there I was one morning in July with the morning news on in the background when I heard Brad Drazen and Keisha Grant talking about my website. I almost fell off my chair. They named ThisIsCT.net as the hotlink for the week. I was very excited....

This summer B and I took a trip to one of my favorite places in Connecticut, Mystic Aquarium, and I was glad to share my photos with you. I didn't get out to take too many photos this year, however the places I did see were the return of the Cow Parade to West Hartford, the parade of Scarecrows Along Main Street in Old Wethersfield, and two places I'd never visited in Connecticut, Colebrook Dam and Saville Dam and Barkhamsted Reservoir.

As always, in New England where we go and what we do depends on the weather, we are Weather Watchers, and the Connecticut Weather Links and Web Cam links were extremely popular.

We started off in January 2007 with Senator Christopher Dodd announcing a Presidential bid, I thought it was too early, but what do I know?

The most popular link of the year on ThisIsCT.net, was not one I would have thought of. A surprise to me, the most popular link - since July - was for people seeking a glance inside 50 Cent's huge Farmington mansion.

I'm looking forward to 2008!
Cheers!
- Linzi

What's new at ThisIsCT.net for November?

Over the past few weeks I've been lucky enough to get around Connecticut enjoying the fall scenery, and the great views on offer.

First I stayed local in West Hartford. I went downtown to check out the Cow Parade. It was last here in 2003, and I thought it was a fun event to see. This year was no different -- well, the cows were different anyway! There's a huge selection, and I think my favorite one was The Mermaid Cow. There are some photos here, I took quite a few. Being that West Hartford is such a busy place it's difficult to get pictures without lots of people around. If you spot one of yourself and don't want it on this website, please let me know.

Then it was off to the charming town of Old Wethersfield to visit the Scarecrows Along Main Street. There was a good display as usual, and when I was walking along the street, it was a beautiful day, and there was a couple getting married in one of the gorgeous old buildings. Two buildings away from the bride and groom was a run-a-way bride scarecrow which was quite funny.

A week later, B and I drove up to Colebrook Dam West Branch Reservoir. The views there are quite stunning. Fall was just beginning to show at that time, and it was pretty. We went down to the "fishing area" and I have to say, if I go there again, I won't be wearing heels! I was a muddy mess after that!

And finally, I've always wanted to go here, Saville Dam and Barkhamsted Reservoir. Wow, it's quite a view! From the first time I ever saw Jack McConnell's photos of the dam I've wanted to check it out for myself. I got the directions from Google, and was kicking myself for not realizing how close to it we were the previous week. Oh well... Tons of bikers were there, they seem to know all the best places to travel to! It looks like a beautiful place to visit any time of the year.

About ThisIsCT.net

Introducing www.ThisIsCT.net

ThisIsCT.net is a Connecticut based website that was started in 2002 as a web directory consisting of all Connecticut websites. Since then it has evolved into an ever-expanding gallery of photos, and wide-ranging assortment of CT links, information and more.

Since we started counting the statistics, we have received almost 250,000 unique visitors from all over the world. Not bad for a wee site with no marketing!!

Some of the photos from ThisIsCT.net have appeared in CT Family Today magazine, the 2005 desk calendar for Walker-Clay, Inc., and in several brochures that advertise conferences held in Connecticut.

Web Directory
Since we began organizing the web directory, we have accumulated over 700 links to the most relevant and absolutely essential Connecticut websites. Directory categories include: Arts & Entertainment links, links to local businesses, Town and City websites, links for Daytrips, fun, kids sites, dining out, nightlife, museums and history, media outlets, sports, travel, weather and more.

Event Calendar
The Event Calendar is one of the most-visited pages on the website, and lists most of the biggest events, in the State by month. The calendar also links to other CT sources for things to do, and places to go, and helps you plan your trip with links to weather information and driving directions.

Blog
The web log (or blog) is a recent addition to the website, started in August 2004. Blog entries usually feature interesting CT stories, suggested web links, photos and is updated frequently. This page includes suggestions of Connecticut Curiosities – the more unusual sites to visit in CT, suggested books about CT, and downloadable photos for your desktop.
